Jim's Note: While at a local shopping centre having a meal with a client, I noticed a woman eating on her own.
What struck me in particular about the woman was her body language. She kept her eyes cast down, and focused on her food. She didn’t look at the other people around her, and indeed, seemed to be trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible. She was not unattractive, but I got the feeling that she wasn’t simply alone, but that she was also lonely as well.
Of course, it's quite possible, indeed likely, that she was simply grabbing a quick bite to eat like I was, and none of the above was how I perceived it to be. But hey, I'm a songwriter, and out of such fleeting moments are songs born.
This song arrived out of the blue, like they often do, the following day.

American Dream is available online through FolkTrax (in Australia);

She sits by herself in the Heartbreak Café,
Stirring her coffee and cream.
She picks at her fingers, dividing the blame,
And knows it’s the end of the dream.

CHORUS
Heartache to Heartache, they circled each other,
Both of them drowning in fear.
Through Tangos and Foxtrots, Two-steps and Waltzes,
Afraid to let go the veneer.

He is sitting alone in a bar on the corner,
Swallowing doubles of Rye.
The pain in his eyes, and the weight on his shoulders,
Betrays the shadows inside.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
So here’s to the lovers, who stand with the others,
Proclaiming their love before all.
And here’s to the losers, who deal with the bruises,
And rise up despite ev’ry fall.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK and CHORUS TWICE

CODA
You’ve got to let go the veneer.
