Jim's Note: A long-time friend of mine, Deirdre Mills recited a poem of hers called, Can’t you hear the stars singing? at the S.A. Folk Centre singers session back in June 2005. The poem immediately caught my attention for the possibilities it had for being turned into a song.

According to Deirdre, the inspiration for the poem came from a book she was reading about the bushmen of the Kalahari desert, who, when asked where their songs came from, replied: “Can’t you hear the stars singing?”

You can read Deirdre's original poem here...

Look up! See the sun is smiling,
Down upon those love birds flying;

High above the new day turning;
While below my heart is yearning

For the love I know you’re bringing;
Can’t you hear the stars are singing?

CHORUS
Can’t you hear the stars are singing,
For the love I know you’re bringing?
While the angels dance above you,
Every note cries out, I love you.

Listen to the night wind sighing,
‘cause it knows my heart is crying;
For each kiss that leaves me breathless.
Waiting makes my body restless
For the love I know you’re bringing;
Can’t you hear the stars are singing?

CHORUS

Darlin' feel my poor heart breaking?
This time there is no mistaking;
Even that old moon is dreaming;
Sleeping through my senses screaming
For the love I know you’re bringing;
Can’t you hear the stars are singing?

CHORUS
