The Stars Are Singing:
The story behind the song

A long-time friend of mine, Deirdre Mills recited a poem of hers called, Can’t you hear the stars singing? at the S.A. Folk Centre singers session back in June 2005. The poem immediately caught my attention for the possibilities it had for being turned into a song.

According to Deirdre, the inspiration for the poem came from a book she was reading about the bushmen of the Kalahari desert, who, when asked where their songs came from, replied: “Can’t you hear the stars singing?”

Here is the original poem as Deirdre wrote it.

Can’t you see the sun smiling?
Can’t you see the clouds flying?
Can’t you see the days turning?
Can’t you see my heart yearning?

Can’t you hear the stars singing?
Can’t you hear the moon dreaming?
Can’t you hear the night wind sighing?
Can’t you hear my heart crying?

Can’t you feel my touch - softly?
Can’t you feel my kiss – breathless?
Can’t you feel my tears - silent?
Can’t you feel my heart – restless?

Can’t you see l love you?
Can’t you hear I love you?
Can’t you feel I love you?

Can’t you say, “I love you”?
