The Stars Are Singing: The story behind the song A
long-time friend of mine, Deirdre Mills recited a poem of hers called, Can’t
you hear the stars singing? at the S.A. Folk Centre singers session
back in June 2005. The poem immediately caught my attention for the
possibilities it had for being turned into a song. According to Deirdre, the inspiration for the poem came from a book she was reading about the bushmen of the Kalahari desert, who, when asked where their songs came from, replied: “Can’t you hear the stars singing?” Here
is the original poem as Deirdre wrote it. Can’t
You Hear The Stars Singing? Can’t
you see the sun smiling? Can’t
you hear the stars singing? Can’t
you feel my touch - softly? Can’t
you see l love you? Can’t
you say, “I love you”? |
