The
Ballad of Billy Winter: What the judges said...
In 2000, Jim entered The
Ballad of Billy Winter in the Songwriters Event 2000
of the Victor Harbor Folk Festival (Victor Harbor is a seaside town
about one hour from Adelaide). Three judges had the onerous task of
listening to around 30 songs performed live in front of fellow
contestants, and audience alike. The three judges, all musicians,
songwriters, or music industry professionals, were Tiffany Eckhardt, John
Munro, and David Steel. Without embarrassing the people concerned, here
are the un-attributed comments as written on the feedback sheets.
JUDGE #1
Music: N/A
Lyrics: With a long story song like this you need to get every
phrase just right. And don't pull your punches. E.G. Rosalita was a
whore...
Other Comments: N/A
JUDGE #2
Music: Supports the lyrics very well. Liked the
almost spoken approach. Not an outstanding original tune, but very apt for
the lyrics.
Lyrics: A sad story with a little tongue in cheek element. A real opus
in telling the whole story and managing to rhyme so well.
Other Comments: Certainly kept my attention all the way! Thank you!
JUDGE #3
Music: Great story put together well in a song - maybe
a bit long
Lyrics: N/A
Other Comments: N/A
