Hark! The
Merchants Laugh and Sing
© 1983, Jim Lesses. All Rights Reserved.
(NOTE: Sung to the tune of Hark!
The Herald Angels Sing.)
Hark! The Merchants Laugh
and Sing, we can sell you anything.
There is no need now to save, here is junk for all who crave,
First we raise our prices higher, then sell to your hearts desire,
What a shame you’ll never know, can’t you see our faces glow?
While alone we shed a tear, why can’t it be like this all year?
There was once a little child, born inside a manger mild.
Some call Him the Prince of Peace, we call Him the Golden Fleece!
In His name we reap and sow, listen to the dollars flow,
Everyone likes money and, we will take yours if we can,
Raise our prices higher still, buy now – then wait for the bill.
In this age of peace and love, buy this lifelike plastic
dove.
There are toys for John and Jane, some cause laughter some cause pain.
Tanks and rifles oh so real, teach your children how to kill,
Games and guns from roof to floor, oh, that we could sell much more.
Lovely dolls that fart and pee, just don’t put them on your knee.
And if Jesus should return,
you would see His poor ears burn,
All this done in Jesus’ name, who will stand to take the blame?
Will the merchants oh so greedy, stop, to help the poor and needy?
In the temple selling yet, they would tell them all to "Get…"
And if Jesus should come down, they would chase Him out of town,
Yes, if Jesus should come down, they would chase Him out of town.
