Jim's
Note: As usual I have no idea where this song came from, except to say
that is was triggered off while listening to the wonderful Peter, Paul
& Mary CD, Lifelines. Something on that album sparked off a
word association or idea that led to In The Shadow of the Eucalypts.
The strange thing is, now when I listen to the same PP&M album, I have
no idea which song triggered this one. By the way, this is a 'kitchen
sink' song. By that I mean, I was actually washing the dishes when the
song was triggered off. This has happened on several other occasions.
Is
This The Promise? is another 'kitchen sink' song. And one last
snippet of useless information - this is the first song I wrote that was
obviously about Australian country life, as opposed to city
life or on general themes.
In
1998, I entered Eucalypts
in the 'Australian' section of the Victor Harbor Songwriting Event (Victor
Harbor is a seaside town about one hour from Adelaide). You can read
the judges comments here...

In the shadow of the eucalypts, my love and I sat down,
And on that perfect summer night, when we lay on the ground.
We did not feel the heat and dust, or hear the country cry.
Our eyes were on each other, as we kissed beneath the sky.
As the wheat belts dance on summer breezes, harvesters combine,
To take me from his loving touch, and him away from mine.
In the shadow of the eucalypts, my lover wooed me still,
Until two lovely daughter’s there began to curb his will.
From early morn till evening light, he toiled to make us proud,
While topsoil dust and growing debt, hung over like a shroud,
As the days grew short, nights were long, and many were the fears,
Of lost control and wasted lives, and longer wasted years.
In the shadow of the eucalypts, my love would count the
cost,
And wrestle with his choices and do battle with his loss.
The money men were closing in and drought would do the rest,
While empty words and promises would finish off the best.
As the dust storms roll across the sky, bankers close the vaults.
And lights go out across the land, as weary men default.
[Bridge]
In the shadow of the eucalypts, my love alone sat down,
And on that perfect summer day, nobody heard the sound.
He did not feel the heat and dust, or hear my lonely cries,
Alone and broken, finally, the light had left his eyes.
In the shadow of the eucalypts, I stop and draw the line,
I have two lovely daughters, and they’re growing up just fine.
We miss his strength and loving arms, our pain may never mend,
But this is ours, it’s all we have, and we’ll stay ‘til the end.
As the golden sun begins its run, and rises in the sky.
I stand to greet another dawn, and wipe a teary eye.
Another day of struggling, of fighting with the bush.
But if they want us out of here, then they will have to push.
Yes, if they want us out of here, they will have to push.
