Songwriting & Performing In 1999, after almost forty years of songwriting and intermittent public performance, Jim tried to encapsulate many of his own personal guiding principles of songwriting and public performance in two articles for SCALA NEWS the bi-monthly newsletter of S.C.A.L.A. the Songwriters Composers and Lyricists Association. There are additional thoughts regarding these two topics in the sections called, This Songwriting Life, and This Performing Life. But first a few words from Jim... "I wrote these two articles for SCALA NEWS during 1999. The first was titled, 'Courting the Muse: Random Thoughts on Songwriting'. In this article I tried to give some idea of the way I went about the craft of songwriting. The second follow-up article was called, 'Courting the Act: Random Thoughts on Performing'. In this article I facetiously presented my Ten Commandments of Public Performance. You can read the full articles as published by following the links in the menu bar on the left. I hope you find them interesting and informative. Remember, these are my opinions only. While they work for me, they may not necessarily work for you. It is the task of each artist to discover for themselves the best way to reach out and make contact with their audience."
